The house is a self build project located behind a large Arts and Crafts style detached house. The client required a five bedroom 250m² GIA house on a tight back garden site. The planners’ concerns about bulk and massing have been addressed by the adoption of an articulated form that breaks the volume down into a two storey block and a single storey wing. The main block contains bedrooms and ancillary spaces, whilst the single storey wing provides an open plan kitchen and living area arranged around a small courtyard facing the garden.
Brick was chosen as the main material so as to harmonise with the surrounding context. Long format dutch bricks built in a staggered bond help to give the facade textural interest. White cast stone jamb pieces provide additional visual interest.
The house designed to be low energy with an MVHR system and high levels of insulation and air tightness.
